St Paul events on our radar- July 23-27

Last week’s River Revue voyage. More sailings on August 1 and 15.

Tonight’s big ticket is for Fringe-For-All #2– an exposure to dozens of Fringe shows for 3 minutes each. Head down to Harriet Island and board the Centennial Showboat –  2012 Fringe Festival for $4 gets you in the door.

Monday is typically the quietest evening of the week in St. Paul, which may be why there are several Trivia events in the bars around town.  Amsterdam Bar and Hall hosts a weeklyMonday night Trivia with Martin and Tom at 6:00. Head down the hill to Lowertown and Barrio’s version of Trivia with Tiffany.  Expect bar specials and other enticements. Not in a downtown mood? Head up the hill to Grand Avenue and Green Mill for a Trivia Mafia with Shogan, a weekly showdown at 9:00.

Tuesday- Visit the Governor’s residence today – and several other days throughout the summer in celebration of the 100th of the house. Reservations required.  Next opportunity August 7.

Tuesday sends us to the History center for both day and evening events.  Check out “The Way We Were: A GCA Flower Show” today and tomorrow for gawking at what the experts can accomplish with flowers.   Hang around for a what has become one of the most popular St Paul evening summer events – 9 Nights of Music. This week should be great whether you want to practice or show off your swing dance skills, or just bring a picnic and watch the action from one of the great vistas of the city.

If you’ve been meaning to go to Landmark Center’s music in the cafe series, this Wednesday’s performance by Martin Devaney is your last chance! At noon.

Wednesday evening is your opportunity to explore the new bookstore – SubText – a Bookstore,  that is occupying the space below Nina’s on Western and Selby Avenues.  One of Minnesota’s greatest contemporary authors, Charles Baxter, will be reading from his fiction at 7:00. Confession: the patio at Moscow on the Hill has become a favorite hangout.  While you are in neighborhood, check out this wonderful secluded space with a daily summertime chilled beet soup special and some lethal home infused vodka cocktails.

Stay tuned for more special St. Paul event notes as the week evolves.

St Paul Music – July 20-22

Holy Batman. There’s a lot of music this weekend.  Don’t let the heat keep you in your AC womb of isolation.  Come on out and rub elbows with all your St. Paul friends, all around town.

Music everywhere.

Music all around St. Paul – on and off the river.

St Paul events on our radar – June 16-20

St Paul gets down

St Paul gets down at the weekly summer dance series outside the Landmark Center.

If you are having a staycation this week, or just have some free time and are looking for a Monday morning lark, today happens to be the day you can grab a free ride on the Cafesijan Carousel between 11 and 4.  Como Zoo and Como Park are full of great things to do on these hot summer days.  There are boats to rent at Como Lake, and a water feature at Como Town.  Most evenings you can catch a free concert at the  Lakeside Pavilion and the on site restaurant, Black Bear Crossings on the Lake, is the only one in town I know of where music events happen during breakfast hours. (on Saturdays)  Work on pronouncing Cafesijan during your adventures. Also note the second weekend of the Fiddler on the Roof Performance. (July 19-21) at Como Pavilion.

The rest of the week be prepared for some tough decision making every evening. On Tuesday, the theme for 9 Nights of Music at the History center is surf music. Beach theme attire encouraged. Maybe literary pursuits aren’t a siren call for you, but I’m hooked on Books and Bars, which is also Tuesday night at Amsterdam Bar and Hall.  Go for Happy Hour then hang out, discuss this month’s book (novella, The Sense of an Ending – if you’re reading this note on Monday, you still have time) and find out what is on the minds of your fellow St. Paulites. It might surprise you.

Wednesday night the River City Revue has the first of 3 sailings, mysteriously called Drinking the River on a Padelford Riverboat.  The $10 ride includes music, scientific anecdotes, river stories, but nothing specific about drink.  If you can’t make it this month, there are two more sailings coming up, with different themes.  Other Wednesday events of note  – the second installment of Jazz on the Line, a pop up gallery sponsored by the WARM collective, a performance by theChastity Brown Band in the recently re-opened Clown Lounge of the Turf Club.

Thursday night conundrum.  Ordway Summer Dance Series(This week it’s Ballroom dancing ) or Music in Mears (and those Heartland house made sausages with savory condiments) on the side.  Last week’s evening of funk was a St. Paul night to remember. A couple hundred Minnesotans were taking over the streets, and doing the funky chicken, bumping and making robot moves. You can participate or be an audience. Hard to go wrong on either end of town.   Flip a coin.

Whatever you are up to in St. Paul this week,we hope St Paul SPOT calendar helps you navigate around town.  Please send us feedback and let us know of your St. Paul discoveries.

Happy middle of July!

Notes from a Not So Reluctant Crew Member – learning to row at the Minnesota Boat Club

Last week brought 2 and 3 of my Learn to Row lessons from the Minnesota Boat Club. For the first few minutes of the class we warmed up on the machines. While on one of the machines, I spent some time lost in my head fretting about my ability to row and wondering whether I would remember anything that had been taught. To catch you up, at our first lesson our instructors had us in the training barge rowing but tethered to the dock. My maiden attempt at rowing did not go as I had imagined. I thought, ‘really – how difficult could this be?’ Turns out there’s plenty you can screw up.

But onward and out to the barge we went. Our instructors, Kerry and Bruce, were liberal with their reminders; carry your oar blade forward, once in the boat never take your hand off your oar, keep the blade square to the water, etc, etc. Once out onto the water, Kerry broke us down into groups of 4 and had us start. As expected, there was a bit of flailing about but everyone seemed to get the hang of it quite quickly and soon all 12 of us were rowing (mostly!) in unison with our lead ‘stroke‘. Yay team!!

Here’s what I discovered very soon into it; I like this team sport. I like the individual effort required much like a more solitary sport such as running but because you have to match the stroke of your leader, I found I stayed more in the moment instead of getting lost in my mind with some needless thought. My brain felt scrubbed clean. Too bad those newly formed blisters kept interrupting my Zen!

By lesson 3, we just got better and better. It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning on the river. At times we would hit that sweet spot where everyone’s blade hit the water at the same moment – at the ‘catch‘, followed by the ‘drive‘ when the blade is in the water moving us forward, the ‘finish‘ as the blade comes out of the water and finally, the ‘recovery‘ as we all slide forward in one fluid movement.

I have 3 more lessons yet; can’t wait! Stay tuned.

Notes from a Reluctant Crew Member – learning to row at the Minnesota Boat Club

A while back I was walking along the Mississippi River with a friend. As we passed the Minneapolis Rowing Club’s building, my friend mentioned the St. Paul version of the rowing club, Minnesota Boat Club, on Raspberry Island. While she was lost in reminiscing about hot summer nights, partying at the River Serpent bar, I was distracted by her offhand mention of Learn to Row classes that she said would be starting up soon. This got me thinking about rowing. I’ve always been an athletic person and while most of my pursuits have been more solitary, the idea of being in sync with a group of people gliding across the Mississippi River certainly held some appeal. Thank the internet for turning a whim into reality; before the day was over, I had Googled Minnesota Boat Club’s website and signed up for the first session offered in May.

My first class was last Tuesday evening. We were greeted by our instructors, Kerry and Bruce, and given a tour of the Boat Club building. In short order our instructors had us in the workout room and onto the rowing machines or ‘ergs’ as they are referred to.

Now, as I mentioned, I’m a pretty athletic person. I trail run, I ride dressage competitively, I’ve had personal trainers blah, blah, blah – so as I’m watching Kerry demonstrate proper rowing technique, I’m thinking ‘no problem’. Um yeah; I climbed aboard that machine and felt as if someone had just asked me to pat my head and rub my tummy while jumping on one foot. But eventually I got into the groove along with everyone else in the class. We all got several turns on the machines, recieved individual feedback on our form and worked on some drills.

Next we were taken out onto the training barge tethered to the dock on the river. The training barge isn’t the sexiest boat on the river, let me assure you, but it was stable and built to withstand our clumsy first-time attempts at rowing. Before we actually got to row, I discovered that they don’t untether the boat from the dock. Once we got into position and were instructed how to row, I understood why. Good call.

I learned a surprising amount in a short time. And while mostly I felt like a total spaz, the instruction was solid, Kerry and Bruce were patient and we all did show improvement by the end of the evening. Like anything else, practice makes perfect.

My next class is Thursday night. I’ll let you know how it goes.
