St Paul events on our radar – June 16-20

St Paul gets down

St Paul gets down at the weekly summer dance series outside the Landmark Center.

If you are having a staycation this week, or just have some free time and are looking for a Monday morning lark, today happens to be the day you can grab a free ride on the Cafesijan Carousel between 11 and 4.  Como Zoo and Como Park are full of great things to do on these hot summer days.  There are boats to rent at Como Lake, and a water feature at Como Town.  Most evenings you can catch a free concert at the  Lakeside Pavilion and the on site restaurant, Black Bear Crossings on the Lake, is the only one in town I know of where music events happen during breakfast hours. (on Saturdays)  Work on pronouncing Cafesijan during your adventures. Also note the second weekend of the Fiddler on the Roof Performance. (July 19-21) at Como Pavilion.

The rest of the week be prepared for some tough decision making every evening. On Tuesday, the theme for 9 Nights of Music at the History center is surf music. Beach theme attire encouraged. Maybe literary pursuits aren’t a siren call for you, but I’m hooked on Books and Bars, which is also Tuesday night at Amsterdam Bar and Hall.  Go for Happy Hour then hang out, discuss this month’s book (novella, The Sense of an Ending – if you’re reading this note on Monday, you still have time) and find out what is on the minds of your fellow St. Paulites. It might surprise you.

Wednesday night the River City Revue has the first of 3 sailings, mysteriously called Drinking the River on a Padelford Riverboat.  The $10 ride includes music, scientific anecdotes, river stories, but nothing specific about drink.  If you can’t make it this month, there are two more sailings coming up, with different themes.  Other Wednesday events of note  – the second installment of Jazz on the Line, a pop up gallery sponsored by the WARM collective, a performance by theChastity Brown Band in the recently re-opened Clown Lounge of the Turf Club.

Thursday night conundrum.  Ordway Summer Dance Series(This week it’s Ballroom dancing ) or Music in Mears (and those Heartland house made sausages with savory condiments) on the side.  Last week’s evening of funk was a St. Paul night to remember. A couple hundred Minnesotans were taking over the streets, and doing the funky chicken, bumping and making robot moves. You can participate or be an audience. Hard to go wrong on either end of town.   Flip a coin.

Whatever you are up to in St. Paul this week,we hope St Paul SPOT calendar helps you navigate around town.  Please send us feedback and let us know of your St. Paul discoveries.

Happy middle of July!
